The Hand of God

May 25, 2023

Daniel 5:25
This is the writing that was inscribed: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Does it ever appear that the rich and powerful play by their own set of rules? Yup. Do they appear to have no consequences for any of their actions? Yup. Doesn’t seem quite fair? Nope Well, some good news because the Sovereign Lord, the Alpha & Omega, the first and the Last will ultimately be the One handing out final judgement. In Daniel 5, we have Belshazzar, the spoiled son of King Nebuchadnezzar, who is both rich and powerful but also completely godless. In the middle of his wild party God’s Hand shows up (literally). The saying – “the writing on the wall” is taken directly from this passage. God intervenes by communicating through His prophet Daniel and a handwritten message on the wall. When God felt the timing was right, He dealt with this godless king. In the next verses Daniel interprets the message –

26 “This is the interpretation of the thing:

MENE: God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end.

27 TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

28 PERES: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

30 In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain

Daniel 5 is a great chapter to study – so many rich applications to today’s world. I encourage you to dig deeper.

Here are a few of my thoughts –

Never give up hope that Jesus is coming back and God will make all things right. In His timing!

Follow Daniel’s example – he was ripped from his homeland and exiled in Babylon but remained faithful to God through his whole life while serving pagan kings in a foreign land.

God’s hand is HisStory. I fret and complain about the current affairs but doing so exhibits my lack of trust in God’s sovereign plan. Stay focused on the prize ahead!
