God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense

May 28, 2023

1 Thessalonians 5:28
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

These are Paul’s last words to the church in Thessalonica. Paul and his team had spent much time, blood, sweat, and tears ministering (2 Thessalonians 2:1-7) to this church. He deeply loved these “brethren”. This was a common saying for both greetings and farewells, as it is used in many of Paul’s other letters. The object of this phrase though, is not common at all. The phrase “Lord Jesus Christ” denotes the lordship (ruler of our lives), humanity (Jesus is His earthly name) and deity (fully God) of the Messiah (Chosen One). It sums up Jesus’ origin, future, ministry, purpose, and role in our lives, which can only be initiated by his grace. We cannot even approach God without the grace provided by Jesus. A good acronym for grace is

God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

Mercy is God withholding His judgement while grace is Him bestowing us with gifts even though we deserve judgement. It is extremely hard for my human mind to comprehend receiving something for nothing, receiving something I could never earn on my own. Paul wants us to know what our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished for us with his life, crucifixion, and resurrection, and once we do, our lives will never be the same again. Today and forever may “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen”
