Gideon – An Unlikely Hero
June 8, 2023
Here is another period of Israel’s history marked by a cycle of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In this episode an ordinary man moves to the forefront. With Gideon, we discover important truths about God’s faithfulness and His ability to work through ordinary individuals to accomplish His purposes.
A powerful reminder highlights God’s deliverance of Israel from the bondage of Egypt. This is the foundation for understanding Gideon’s calling and the divine intervention that would follow. Despite the Israelites’ repeated disobedience, God’s love and mercy never wavered. He remained committed to His covenant promises and sought to bring His people back to Him.
Gideon, at first glance, appears to be an unlikely candidate for the role of a deliverer. Here he’s hiding in a winepress, grinding wheat, trying to avoid the watchful eyes of the Midianites who had oppressed Israel for years. Fear had gripped the hearts of God’s people, and they cried out to Him for help. In response to their pleas, God chose Gideon, an ordinary, to lead His people to victory.
God often calls us when we least expect it, choosing ordinary individuals to accomplish extraordinary tasks for His glory. It is in our weakness that His strength is made perfect. Gideon’s initial response revealed his own insecurities and doubts about his ability to fulfill the call. God reassured Gideon, saying, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” (Judges 6:16 ESV)
God’s presence and promise were all Gideon needed to step out and embrace his calling. God patiently reassured Gideon, demonstrating His power and faithfulness at every step.
As we reflect on Gideon’s story, we are reminded that God sees our potential even when we doubt ourselves. He equips and empowers us to fulfill the tasks He has entrusted to us. We don’t have to rely on our own strength or abilities, but rather on the unwavering faithfulness of our Heavenly Father.
Gideon is a reminder that God can use anyone who is willing to step out in faith. Our shortcomings and limitations are not obstacles to God; instead, they become opportunities for Him to display His glory. Gideon is never punished or replaced for his questions or doubts instead, God’s response is firm but gentle! When we surrender our doubts and insecurities to Him, He can work mightily through us.
Today, embrace the calling God has placed on your life, regardless of how ordinary or insignificant we may feel. Just as God was with Gideon every step of the way, He promises to be with us as well. In our weakness, His strength always shines through. Trust Him. Follow His lead. Witness His faithfulness. Experience victories that stretch the ordinary beyond extraordinary!
