Gideon’s Altar- A Testimony of Surrender

June 28, 2023

Judges 6:28
When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.

Visiting Gideon again the episode is still unfolding (see June 8th devotional). Again, God’s power and faithfulness is on full display. Here we witness a pivotal moment in Gideon’s journey as he takes a bold step of faith. Gideon tears down the altar of Baal in his community. This act of obedience reveals important truths about surrender and the call to wholeheartedly follow the one true God. It all comes down to surrender.

Remember the Israelites had strayed from their devotion to God and turned to the worship of Baal, a false god. Gideon was now faced with a significant decision. Would he choose to remain complacent, allowing idolatry to prevail, or would he rise as a faithful servant and confront the spiritual bondage that gripped the people?

Gideon, fueled by the desire for true worship to be restored, acted, tore down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah pole. Both were symbols of false worship and spiritual bondage. Gideon’s act of obedience to God demonstrated his complete surrender to the Lord and his willingness to stand against the prevailing culture.

This act of tearing down these false gods serves as a powerful metaphor for our own spiritual journey. Like Gideon, we are called to examine the altars we have empowered in our hearts and lives—places where false gods and idols have taken root. These altars can come in various forms, such as material possessions, relationships, or pursuits that have taken precedence over our relationship with God. They hinder us from experiencing the abundant life God has prepared for us.

We too must identify and dismantle the idols that hinder our relationship with the one true God. This process requires humility, self-reflection, and a deep desire to live in alignment with God’s will. Surrender up these alters and recreate that space for God to reign supreme in our hearts while transforming us from the inside out.

Sadly, surrendering our idols is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing process. Surrender requires daily commitment and a willingness to submit our lives to God’s authority. We must examine our hearts, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where idols may have crept in. Through prayer, confession, and intentional obedience, we experience the freedom and joy that comes from a life fully surrendered to God.

Gideon’s actions should inspire us to confront the spiritual strongholds in our communities. We are called to be agents of change, standing against the prevailing culture, and shining the light of Christ. As we boldly live out our faith and share the truth of the Gospel, we have the potential to impact our families, friends, and even entire communities for the glory of God.

Today, examine your hearts. Identify those idols that may have taken priority over our devotion to God. Have the courage to tear down and surrender fully to Him. Experience the transforming power of God and become vessels of His love and truth in a world that desperately needs Him.
