Psalms 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23 is probably one of the first chapters we all learned to memorize when we were children. It’s a great chapter for new beginnings whether this is a new birth of a child or a spiritual new birth.

The Lord is my shepherd is an awesome beginning! He will lead us and guide us as He leads us through challenging times as we grow up. Sometimes it may seem like our babies will cry all day and need constant care. The same can be true of a baby in the Lord. How many times do we take our eyes off the Lord and look at circumstances around us and we whine or cry because all is not as we want them to be? We should not just remember that God will lead us and guide us – He will also prepare for us a table in the presence of our enemies. We are not promised an easy life. We are only promised that He will be with us. Sometimes our hard times make us better people and better Christians. Nothing that happens to us is a surprise to God, so we need to grow up and learn the lessons He wants us to learn. We don’t need to live in fear – He’s got his rod and staff to protect and comfort us. God has got this! And David concludes this chapter with “Surely goodness and mercy (love) will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
