Me, We or Him

July 22, 2023

Matthew 7:22
Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’

As you are reading this a group of 11 people from across the state of Florida are in Nicaragua sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible. I chose this verse because having been on many mission trips to Nicaragua I can see how easy it is to say, “God look what I have done”. “Look at how many kids heard ME share the gospel”. “Look at how many kids WE saved”. “Look at all the good I did for you”. All those things, while being good, are not gospel focused. They are ME focused. When people begin thinking that all the good that has happened in their lives is from their own doing and not of God, they have missed the point. I have fallen into this way of thinking many times. I look at my life and think I have done more good things than the person next to me. I am working towards becoming a full time missionary. I go on mission trips. I deserve to get into heaven. But that is not the point. As 1 Corinthians 13 clearly tells us, anything done without love is useless. There was no list of things you could do without love. This was meant to encompass everything we do. Life can be hard and people can be mean, but as believers God calls us to rely on Him for supplying that love because He knows we cannot do it on our own. What kind of love is it that God is calling us to show? The love in 1 John 4 that says “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God…” (1 John 4:7a ESV). If we do not have Jesus in us, we cannot love others properly and if we cannot love then our actions, our words, and our intentions are all invalid. They have no meaning behind them.

The main idea I want to get across is that while doing good things for God is great, do not fool yourself into thinking that these good things are what ultimately get you into the right graces with God. It does not matter what you do if you have not accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. If we just needed to do good things to get into heaven Jesus’s death would have meant nothing. But it does mean something! It means everything! Jesus conquered death, He defeated sin, and He now sits at the right hand of God waiting for the day He gets to return to get His bride. Are you ready for that?
