Growing up I can remember we always had to one up each other. Every time someone did something cool someone else had to remind them, they did the same thing before or something better- (One Ups). Now many years later those stories are just memories. Most of the time we never think about those things until we get back together with our friends. They are there in our memories, but they are not thought of because they happened many years ago.
In the same way we see in the Old Testament the Lord constantly reminds the Israelites of the promises He made to their fathers. In the beginning of Deuteronomy 8 the Lord is reminding them of the goodness that He has promised to His people. It happened many years prior, and it seems as though they had forgotten about it and began living the way they wanted to rather than the way the Lord instructed that got them to where they were today. A good land flowing with and abundance of water (Deuteronomy 8:7). How often do we forget what God has done for us in the past? How often do we forget that He has provided every step of the way? He was there every time we needed Him when no one else was.
I encourage everyone who reads this to spend 5 minutes remembering the things the Lord has done for them (or their families). If it helps write it down. Make a list of ways God has provided so that you can remember He can and will do those again. Take a few minutes today to thank God for being consistent and never changing. Thank God for being true to His word and always being King of the ONE UPS.
Last thing I want to say about this is that the Israelites were enslaved to the Egyptians. They were not free. The Lord set them free, and He is ready to set you free! Remember what Jesus did on the cross for us, remember how He conquered the grave and was the sacrifice we could not be. Remember that He wants to have a relationship with you and tells us to go share this good news with the whole world. In Jesus name, Go and Be Free.
