No Excuses

August 20, 2023

Matthew 8:21
Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”

As a child I remember singing the song about excuses. It’s a fun, catchy song. I can’t even remember who the original songwriter was. It goes something like this, “excuses excuses you hear them every day. The devil he’ll supply them if church you stay away. When people come to love the Lord, the devil always loses, so keep those folks away from church he offers them excuses.”

When God calls us to do something we don’t really feel like doing, what do we do? Some of us (me included) can spend or waste time coming up with excuses for our laziness or lack of faith. I wonder how much time we’ve wasted digging or making up excuses? In this verse I’d say burying one’s father was a good excuse. Or was it just another procrastinating tactic? Jesus was, and still is very good at calling His people to the mat. Becoming a disciple in that day and time must have been a new and scary thought. Is it easier to act in faith when God calls us to do something within our comfort level? Sometimes I think God calls us to do things that can only be done by God’s strength and our ability to obey. How much more glory comes to God when we are stretched beyond our own abilities? I know from personal experience that I grow so much more spiritually when I need God to help me accomplish a task!

Today let’s step out in faith and see what God does through us, No excuses.
