Stand Here by Me

May 31, 2024

Deuteronomy 5:31
But as for you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.

When God asks us to stand here by Me, He is saying “listen up to what I must share with you.”  Aren’t we glad that we stand by His leading in this special place from time to time in life? I guess we can choose to stand wherever we want. God was asking Moses to “stand here by Me!” Isn’t that what God is saying to us daily? Shall we stand wherever we want or by His Spirit come and stand by Him? Being there on Mt. Sinai with the Lord in His glory and love as He shared His longing that it might be well with Israel must have a been an amazingly unforgettable time for our man Moses. The Lord God gave the people of Israel all the ways and reasons to obey Him. When we have trouble obeying God, we are clearly lacking in one or both areas: either we forget His glory, or we forget His love for us, or we forget both of them. Here we stand today with the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The Lord has given us His Word. As we allow Him to speak to us and listen carefully to what He has to say to us, we are, as it were, “standing here by Him,” as Moses did so many centuries ago. Obedience is still a matter of our recognition of God’s glory and love for us. As future generations would ask about God’s deliverance and the giving of the Law, Israel was to say: So, the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God (His Glory) for our good always and for our survival as it is today. (His Love) (Deuteronomy 6:24)

Thank you, LORD, for always asking us to “stand here by You” as You instruct us to hear Your Word and beckon us to obey and follow it.
