A New Name

August 2, 2024

Isaiah 62:2
The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name, which Yahweh’s mouth will name.

(Editor’s note: This is a little bit of a stretch, but we are using Isaiah 62:2 for 8/2 devotional. 6+2=8 so it kind of works.)

Recently we were updating some insurance.  The man we were dealing with had an unusual name.  My husband asked him where his name was from since he had not heard it before.  He then told us the story.  He said he would be the only one in America with that name.  When his grandfather immigrated to America, he had to go through Ellis Island as did most immigrants.  He, along with most people, were scared, confused by the crowds of people, and somewhat intimidated because most could not speak English.  Many were frightened that something would be found wrong with them, and they would be deported.  Getting through Ellis Island meant everything.

    So, when this man was asked what his name was, he misunderstood.  He thought they were asking what his occupation was.  So, he told them his name was a gates keeper at the Hungarian palace.  So now he is not only in a new country, but he has a new name.

      All those who know Jesus as their Savior received a new name when they were saved.  And our citizenship is in a new country.  We just are not there yet.  Now we are not just a sinner, but a sinner saved by grace.  We are now children of the king.  In fact, Isaiah tells us that our names engraved by the hand of God.  Our names are written down ‘in the book’ never to be erased.  Once written there, no one can delete them.  Not accidentally or on purpose.  Our names are forever engraved on His hands.

    The question is, do we walk worthy of our new name?  We are called a child of God.  Do we walk like one?  We must stand firm on the Word of God.  It seems that every day we hear of another believer who has capitulated to the present culture.  It grieves us but think how it grieves our Father when we do not walk according to our name.  We need to pray for those who seemed to have wobbled when we hear about them. We have no idea of the struggle they have been through.   And we need to trust the one who engraved our name on His hand that we will finish well.  We need to trust His Word so that we will never bring shame upon it.

   One day, maybe soon, we will be in our new country as well.  In the meantime, meditate on the words of the hymn, Before the Throne of God Above.

Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea,

A great high priest Whose name is Love who ever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on His hands, My name is written on His heart.

I know that while in heav’n He stands, No tongue can bid me thence depart;

 No tongue can bid me thence depart.
