Keeping Watch
January 31, 2025
During my time in the military, I spent a lot of time on guard duty. It wasn’t very exciting work, but it was extremely important. Many times, the lives of my fellow soldiers depended on my performance of this task. I needed to stay mentally alert in order to use all of my senses to pay attention to my surroundings. I had to keep my eyes open to see any possible threats from far off. I had to listen carefully for the slightest sound that was out of the ordinary. I even had to use my sense of smell just in case potential threats were in need of a shower. Failure in this vigilance was completely unacceptable.
The same applies in our faith. God speaks to us in various ways. We need to be alert and receptive to whatever way he chooses to communicate with us. He can speak through His Word, through our fellow believers, and the Holy Spirit will speak directly into our hearts. With all of the distractions that exist in our world, we need to be diligent in training ourselves to pay attention to our Father when he speaks to us. This is done through consistently reading our Bibles, spending time with fellow believers in church, and praying to God faithfully. Doing these things will keep us alert to whatever He wants to tell us. So, as you enjoy your special day, I pray that you maintain vigilance to all the possible ways that God wants to communicate with you. He loves you, He cares, and He wants to speak into your life. God Bless.
