Master Class
February 23, 2025
Happy Birthday! Happy Spiritual Birthday or Anniversary or whatever event makes this day special for you. Have you decided what to do with your birthday $ yet? How about an annual subscription to Master Class? For only $15 a month you can learn from the world’s top experts in their field. This could be a great way to “better” yourself – OR you could learn from the wisest person to ever live, for free!
Solomon shared his “Master Classes” in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. In Chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes, he contemplates the wisdom of his lifelong pursuits. You see, Solomon had already achieved everything that any Master Class could ever teach you. These were the fruits of his labor – unlimited pleasure, lots & lots of $, great architectural accomplishments, owned anything he desired, the best entertainment, and he became greater than anyone in his kingdom. He lacked nothing. Sometimes we dream – what would we do with $5 million? Solomon didn’t have to dream – he lived it. He was a Master.
What did Solomon conclude? Well, at first this was his observation – Eccl 2: 10 Whatever my eyes desired, I didn’t keep from them. I didn’t withhold my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor, and this was my portion from all my labor. 11 Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
Wait. What? Solomon looked back at all his accomplishments and considered them vain? That doesn’t make any sense. We are supposed to be happy with “things”. Every media outlet tells us so. We are subliminally taught – “If I can just get the next shiny “toy” I will be satisfied”. Well, Solomon had every “shiny new toy” imaginable.
As he progresses through chapter 2, he concludes in vs 24 – “There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God “
As you celebrate your special day, enjoy the moment. Enjoy your new gifts. But remember that those gifts don’t bring everlasting satisfaction. Only the peace of God in your heart brings eternal satisfaction. As believers in Christ, whatever we do for “work” daily can be satisfying if we are trusting God. No matter if we are in ministry or driving a taxicab. Colossians 3:23 –“And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,” Let us learn from Solomon that we only serve the true Master and ultimately, we do not strive for earthly possessions but to hear Him say “well done thy good and faithful servant”.
