What does Love Look Like?

April 21, 2025

1 John 4:21
This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

In the landscape of humanity, love stands as the most profound and universal force. It is the very nature of God written upon the world. Given to us as a gift through the sacrifice of Christ, God’s love has become intimately intertwined with the love we are called to show others. This devotional is a simple reminder of what this love of ours should look like.

     1. Our love should be selfless. Not just existing in sentiment and words our care should shine in action. To be sacrificial and yielding to the well-being of others above ourselves. As Christ laid down his life we are called to as well.

     2. Our love should not know prejudice. The love of Jesus was not bound to social status, race, ethnicity, or religion. We should speak with honesty but not hold hatred in our hearts. To genuinely step out and love others as a beacon for the unity we can all experience under God’s redemption.

     3. Our love should be transformative. In loving others, we can become vessels of God’s grace, peace, and kindness. By acting with compassion and forgiveness through the spirit we can restore relationships, bring hope, and heal the wounded.

     4. Lastly, our love should be reflective. The truth is our ability to love others genuinely is a mirror of our love for God. At times, love may be a difficult conversation about a friend’s sin, or stepping forward to apologize for your wrongdoing. For we are reminded by John (4:20) that to hate your brother and deny them love can make us a liar in our own claims to love God.

So, I urge you and myself to be fearfully reflective on what God’s love towards me was, and how I now need to be loving others in turn.
