Spoils

In the tenth book of the Bible, chapter eight tells of King David’s victories.  It’s a short read of David’s battles and the spoils he took.  Let’s review David’s victories in this chapter and the spoils he gathered:

Philistines – The area of Metheg-ammah.

Moabites – Half of them he put to death.

King Hadadezer of Zobah – He captured 1,700 horsemen, 22,000 horsemen, and

hamstrung all the chariot horses except for 100. He brought shields of gold to Jerusalem and a great deal of bronze.

Syrians of Damascus – He killed 22,000 men and the Syrians were servants to David and brought tribute.

Edom, Moab, Ammonites, Philistines, Amalek – Silver and gold.

Edomites – He struck down 18,000 men and put up garrisons.  The Edomites became his servants.

In addition to these spoils, King Toi of Hamath sent his son Joram to ask about David and bless him.  Prince Joram also delivered gifts of gold, silver, and bronze.  All of these and more David dedicated to the LORD.

Birthdays are a good time to look back. We all have had battles.  Although we may not be kings or queens ruling over a nation, the fights we have are very real. As we keep our focus on God as David did, in looking back, we will see “spoils” we have gathered. 

Do just as we did here; take a moment and list past battles you have fought.  Beside them write the spoils you received because of the battle. They may not be silver, gold, or bronze.  Some spoils are better than those. Your spoils may include a stronger faith, a bigger purpose, a greater love for God and others. Whatever your spoils, dedicate them to the LORD.
