“Rough” Areas and “Rough” People

October 16, 2025

Matthew 10:16
“Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”

I am a missionary in San Jose, Costa Rica. I work with children who live in an area that can be considered “rough”. Many of our local friends think that my wife and I are crazy for going there on a regular basis. Not many are willing to visit the community with us. Despite the area’s bad reputation, we know that God called our family to serve and share the love of Jesus with the people who need the most help. We actively apply the principle that Jesus gives us in Matthew 10:16. Being some of the few gringos (foreigners) who can be found in the area, we could be seen as sheep among wolves. Because of this, we work very hard to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. When working, we stay aware of our surroundings and take other precautions so as to not draw negative attention to ourselves. At the same time, we continue to be a consistent presence in the community. We make a point to greet others and be friendly with those we encounter. I personally do my best to help when I see someone in need. Things like carrying groceries or just taking the time to listen to someone’s difficult story. After living here for 3 years, God has continued to be faithful in caring for our family, as we go share His love with others.

Now you may not work in a “rough” area like I do, but we all must deal with different types of hostile environments in our lives. Especially as Christians the world is becoming increasingly hostile towards us. Which is why Jesus calls all of us to be both wise and harmless in order to share the good news. Whether it’s in our places of work or even within our own families, we are not called to fight it out with those who oppose our beliefs. We are to apply God given wisdom and deal with them gently. In doing so, we will stand out to others and draw positive attention to ourselves and our Heavenly Father. For example, my family and I are graciously welcomed into the community that we serve. This community that others make a point to avoid. God’s Word and love is shared in a place that would be otherwise overlooked. So, as you enjoy your special day, try to think of places or people that may need to experience the love of Jesus. What could you do about that? Now I’m not saying go find the roughest area in your neighborhood. I am saying that God will put a place or group of people on your heart that might need some attention. I recommend that you trust Him, as I trust Him. Incredible things can happen when you do. God Bless.
