Mighty Yahweh

Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 WEB
What better way to celebrate your birthday than to rest in the eternal promises of God expressed in this verse? I feel honored to celebrate with you today through this devotional, and to celebrate my own father, the founder of this site.
The first time I remember reading this verse, I was on my first mission trip to Costa Rica at age 14. It was the moment of my life that Jesus really showed me what a relationship with Him can be, and I know He used this verse as part of it. When I read this verse, I just opened my Bible to a random spot and read the first thing I saw. While I admit it wasn’t the best Bible study method, the Lord used it in that moment to bathe me in His love, to show me the intimate relationship He desired to have with me. The idea of Him being joyful over me, and calming me in His love, touched my heart so deeply. And to think, that was all without understanding the context behind this verse.
When I’ve revisited this short book hidden at the end of the Old Testament and gotten to understand the context, it’s even richer and more meaningful! This verse is amidst a larger promise from the Lord to restore His chosen people who have been oppressed, abused, and scattered. It’s a promise of hope to the innocent that those who have committed evil acts against them will receive their punishment and will no longer be able to hurt them. He will take out the arrogant exulting ones, and those that remain will take refuge in Yahweh’s name, standing shoulder to shoulder to call on His name. And no one will make them afraid! (vv. 9, 11, 13). Right before verse 17, the command given is to not be afraid, and to not let your hands be weak. Then this string of promises is given to affirm how to not be afraid or weak – it’s to rest in the knowledge that God is among us, a mighty one who will save. That He is rejoicing over us with joy, and will calm us in His love, while rejoicing over us with singing. Our hope is not an empty wish for what may or may not come in the future. Hope is a Person, who is present and active in our lives and always keeps His promises. No matter what troubles or evils you may be facing at this moment, you can be calmed by His love, because it is active and true and never fails. There’s no need to fear, for God is rejoicing over you and is mighty to save!
